We are very proud to have been the first USDA certified organic hemp farm in NH. We almost exclusively eat organic foods or foods that we grow. We think it is important for the planet and healthier for our family.
For our small farm the paperwork was a lot to manage. Though the local people managing the program were amazing at helping us through the process. We could not have done it without them. There is also a cost to the program that we felt could be better spent elsewhere.
Organic certification still allows some pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Most of these are natural and perfectly safe. We are not claiming that their guidelines are not safe. We just don’t need those things to protect our crops. Hemp is naturally pest resistant and just needs some sweat equity from us.
The most important thing is keeping the plants healthy through crop rotation, adding only certified organic compost , creating our own compost, and even creating gold from our worm farm that eats our organic food scraps.
