CBD vs THC – What’s the difference?

CBD and THC are both phytocannabinoids, natural compounds that come from the cannabis genus of plants (i.e. hemp and marijuana), but they have very different effects and vary in their level of legality federally and from state to state. Hemp contains high amounts of CBD and 0.3% or less of THC while marijuana contains high amounts of THC (> 0.3%) and lower amounts of CBD.

CBD stands for Cannabidiol and it does not make you high.

THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol and it produces the “high” effect that marijuana is known for. Marijuana-derived THC is illegal federally and its legality varies from state to state.

There are 3 types of CBD:

CBD Isolate and Broad Spectrum CBD are THC-free and are legal in all 50 states.

Full-spectrum CBD contains 0.3% THC or less. However, its legality varies by state. As of August 2026, Idaho and California prohibit the sale or possession of hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD products. Virginia limits hemp-derived products to less than 0.3% total THC and no more than 2 mg of total THC per package. Laws and regulations governing full-spectrum CBD can change at any time. Before ordering, check your state’s latest requirements to make sure the product is legal where you live.
